Taverna & Rooms Koulieris – Anopoli, Sfakia, Crete – Free WiFi
Georgios Koulieris and Mirela Tsoumenis are your hosts at this magic family-style tavern. Georgios built it himself over the last five years – with a little help of course. Drop by and have a meal or buy some of his self-made honey. He also rents out two very large rooms, each for up to 5 – 6 people, one at the side and one at the back of the house. Each room has its own separate modern tiled bathroom; their capacity and location make them ideal as a hostel for active holidays.
Far from the madding crowd
Don’t bring disco-hungry teenagers here! This is a wonderful location to slow down from the humdrum pace of modern life and recharge flagging batteries.
The population density of the Sfakia region is very low, due to its mountainous, fairly arid nature. But it is riddled with hiking trails, most of which are quite challenging, offering much solitude and rewarding hardy hikers with incredible pageants. Mountain biking is also practiced, and there are many gorges which one can clamber through. At nearby Aradena there is even bungy jumping into the Aradena gorge.
But don’t worry if you’re not that fit; Anopoli (literally “Upper Town”) is situated on a large high plateau right above the southern shore. We found walking the “roads” most pleasant – in the hinterland they’re all rocky gravel tracks – where you can go for hours without meeting a soul (barring sheep and goats). And the views are hardly less majestic than those on the hiking trails!
